How to Look After Dogs in Cold Weather

Lakena Jolivet

Winter can be a challenging time for our furry friends, especially those who aren’t naturally suited for colder climates. Proper care during cold weather helps ensure your dog stays happy, healthy, and safe. Here are some tips for looking after your dog in winter:

1. Limit Time Outdoors

While dogs need exercise, extreme cold can be dangerous. Limit outdoor time, especially for small, elderly, or short-haired breeds. Always supervise your dog to ensure they aren’t showing signs of discomfort, like shivering or lifting their paws.

2. Invest in Winter Gear

For dogs with short fur or thin coats, a sweater or dog jacket can make a huge difference. Booties can protect their paws from ice, salt, and snow, though some dogs may take time to adjust to wearing them.

3. Protect Their Paws

Snow, ice, and de-icing chemicals can irritate or injure your dog’s paws. After walks, wipe their paws with a damp cloth to remove salt or debris. Consider applying paw balm to create a protective barrier.

4. Provide Adequate Shelter

If your dog spends time outdoors, ensure they have a warm, insulated shelter to protect them from the elements. For indoor dogs, create a cosy spot away from drafts with soft bedding or a blanket.

5. Keep Them Hydrated

Dehydration can still occur in cold weather, especially if the air is dry. Ensure your dog always has access to fresh, unfrozen water. Heated water bowls can be helpful for outdoor setups.

6. Adjust Their Diet if Needed

Dogs may need extra calories during winter to maintain their energy levels, especially if they’re more active outdoors. Check out our high-protein treat range. Consult your vet before making significant changes to their diet.

7. Be Aware of Hypothermia and Frostbite

Know the signs of hypothermia (shivering, lethargy, weakness) and frostbite (pale or blue skin, especially on ears, paws, or tail). If you suspect either condition, seek veterinary help immediately.

8. Avoid Leaving Dogs in Cold Cars

Just as cars can overheat in summer, they can become dangerously cold in winter. Never leave your dog alone in a car during freezing temperatures.

9. Maintain Visibility

Winter days are shorter, and walks often happen in low light. Equip your dog with reflective gear or an LED collar to keep them visible and safe during evening or early morning outings.

By taking these precautions, you can help your dog enjoy the winter season while staying warm and healthy. After all, your pup deserves comfort and care in every season! 🐾❄️
